Erin McIntosh is an artist and educator living near Atlanta, Georgia. She is an Associate Professor at the University of North Georgia and has taught multiple semesters in Cortona, Italy, on the University of Georgia’s Cortona, Italy, Study Abroad Program. She actively exhibits her paintings in solo and group exhibitions regionally and nationally. Her paintings have been published in New American Paintings, The Georgia Review, and Create Magazine. She has had residencies at the Vermont Studio Center and Atlantic Center for the Arts. Erin’s work is represented by Gregg Irby Gallery in Atlanta, ARTicles Gallery in St. Petersburg, FL, and Weinberger Fine Art in Kansas City, MO.

Artist Statement

I find joy in making lyrical and rhythmic paintings in water-based media and collage. I love exploring color and composition through painting abstract subjects that are biomorphic or geometric in nature - often forms land somewhere in between. My paintings are inspired by the microscopic world, gardens, architecture, poetic gestures and are filled with anthropomorphic shapes.

My color and process-driven, abstract works start with small visual notations often made by working with collage, and develop intuitively. Improvisation and play are central to my painting practice. Compositions are dynamic stemming from a background in dance, time spent cycling, and interest in the non-verbal communication of music. Meaning emerges from the process of making as paintings become surprising visual metaphors.
